Police Arraign 52-Year-Old Driver Over Alleged Defilement In Anambra

The police on Thursday arraigned a 52-year-old driver, Chukwudi Nwayaka, before the Children, Sexual and Gender-based Violence Offences Court in Awka, Anambra State, over the alleged defilement of a 14-year-old girl.

The defendant was brought before Chief Magistrate U.E. Onochie on a one-count charge bordering on defilement.

According to the prosecutor, Inspector Chinyere Okechukwu, the incident allegedly occurred on April 10 in Umuawulu community, Awka South Local Government Area.

The prosecutor told the court that the defendant allegedly lured the teenage girl into his house and had unlawful canal knowledge of her.

She further stated that the victim’s mother began searching for her daughter after noticing she was missing before receiving information that the girl had been seen with the defendant.

According to the prosecution, the mother and some residents later went to the defendant’s residence where the teenager was allegedly found in a compromising situation with him.

The defendant was subsequently arrested.

The court also heard that a medical examination conducted at the Ntasi Sexual Assault Referral Centre at General Hospital Enugu-Ukwu reportedly confirmed that the girl had been defiled.

The offence allegedly violates Section 3(2) of the Violence Against Persons Prohibition and Protection Law of Anambra State, 2017.

However, the defendant denied intentionally committing the act, claiming he had returned home drunk from a traditional marriage ceremony and could not explain how the girl ended up in his room.

Chief Magistrate Onochie ordered that the defendant be remanded at the Awka Correctional Centre and adjourned the case until June 10 for hearing.
