The Inspector-General of Police, Tunji Disu, has declared that the era of impunity in the Nigeria Police Force is over, promising reforms aimed at building a more transparent and accountable police system.
Speaking during a visit to the Edo State Police Command in Benin on Friday, the IGP said officers involved in misconduct would now face serious consequences.
Disu referenced a recent case where a police officer allegedly shot a civilian who was not resisting arrest, describing the incident as a clear example of impunity.
“That’s impunity. You arrested somebody who was not struggling with you, brought him out in daylight and shot him,” he said.
According to the IGP, the officers involved were immediately tried, dismissed from the force and would face prosecution in court.
He stressed that the Nigeria Police Force was entering a new phase focused on discipline, accountability and professionalism.
“The era of impunity is over. We have to build a new Nigerian Police Force,” Disu stated.
The police boss also promised to improve the traffic warden unit after officers complained about years of poor recruitment and lack of support.
Meanwhile, Edo State Commissioner of Police, Monday Agbonika, appealed for more logistics and tactical support to strengthen security operations across the state.
