Hundreds of women from Umuenwelum community in Anambra West Local Government Area staged a peaceful protest over the controversial death of a young mother, Anthonia Okafor.
The women, under the umbrella of Umuada Umuenwelum, marched through the community dressed in black and carrying green leaves a traditional symbol of protest and justice in Igbo culture.
According to reports, the deceased died shortly after childbirth in Lagos on April 9, 2026. Her death has raised concerns following claims of visible injuries on her body and what the community described as inconsistent explanations from her husband.
During the protest, the women visited the husband’s family compound but found it locked, which further heightened tension.
The group demanded a full and transparent investigation into the circumstances surrounding her death, including the handling of her body and delays in notifying her family.
Speaking during the protest, the group’s leader, Theresa Igwenma, said the action was part of a broader concern over similar cases involving married women.
Civil society organisations have also joined calls for accountability, urging authorities to investigate the case thoroughly and ensure justice is served.
As of the time of reporting, there has been no official statement from law enforcement authorities.
