Trump Vows U.S. Will Help Defend Ukraine But “No Troops on the Ground”

President Donald Trump on Tuesday made a clear promise about America’s role in Ukraine’s future the U.S. will help defend the country after its war with Russia, but not with boots on the ground.

“You have my assurance,” Trump told Fox News, a day after hosting Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and several top European leaders at the White House.

The pledge comes as Trump tries to position himself as the broker of an eventual peace deal, while also reassuring both Ukraine and Europe of U.S. support. Still, his words draw a firm line: America will back Ukraine politically, financially, and militarily in other ways but U.S. soldiers will not be sent to fight on Ukrainian soil.

Trump’s balancing act reflects the high stakes. European leaders are pressing Washington for stronger guarantees as Russia shows no signs of backing down, while U.S. voters remain wary of another overseas war. By stressing “no troops,” Trump is betting that America can play peacemaker without becoming entangled in another endless conflict.
