As the Jeffrey Epstein files continue to dominate headlines and public outrage grows, President Donald Trump’s response is raising eyebrows even among former allies.
Rather than defusing the situation, Trump has doubled down with dismissive and at times deflective statements that have only added fuel to the fire. Now, one former Republican lawmaker is offering a blunt explanation: Trump simply can’t face reality.
“He’s not capable of confronting this head-on,” the ex-lawmaker said, speaking under condition of anonymity. “Every time he opens his mouth about Epstein, it gets worse for him and for the party.”

The Epstein scandal has re-emerged with renewed fury after portions of sealed documents were released implicating powerful figures, including several close to Trump. While Trump hasn’t been directly charged or officially named in the most damning sections, his past association with Epstein has returned to the spotlight.
Instead of addressing it with clarity, Trump has lashed out at reporters, called the files “old news,” and accused the media of staging a “deep state distraction” a narrative that’s not sitting well with moderates or independents heading into a critical election cycle.
“This isn’t just about optics anymore,” the former lawmaker warned. “It’s about leadership and right now, Trump’s inability to deal with this is making him look cornered and unstable.”
With public trust already fragile, and internal GOP fractures widening, Trump’s defiance over the Epstein issue may prove more politically damaging than he realizes.
