Lagos State lawmaker and Nollywood actor, Desmond Elliot, has rejected the outcome of the All Progressives Congress (APC) primary election for Surulere Constituency I after suffering a massive defeat in Wednesday’s exercise.
The lawmaker lost the APC ticket for a return to the Lagos State House of Assembly after his opponent, Barakat Odunuga-Bakare, secured a landslide victory in the primary election.
According to reports, Odunuga-Bakare polled 11,385 votes to emerge winner of the contest, while Desmond Elliot reportedly scored 270 votes. Political observers believe Odunuga-Bakare enjoys the support of Femi Gbajabiamila.
Reacting after the exercise, Elliot said he would challenge the process through the party’s appeal mechanism, insisting that the primary election was marred by intimidation and irregularities.
Speaking with reporters, the actor-turned-politician stated that he and his supporters were dissatisfied with the conduct of the election.
“We are appealing, and as I say, it is not a do-or-die affair. I’m here to serve the people,” he said.
Desmond Elliot further alleged that several of his supporters were injured during the primary process, although he confirmed that no lives were lost.
According to him, many of his supporters were denied access to the voting venue, while others were allegedly accused of presenting fake membership cards without proper verification.
The lawmaker also denied claims that he stepped down from the race, maintaining that only the party leadership could ask him to withdraw.
“The only person who can ask me to step down is the party,” Elliot stated.
Despite the controversy surrounding the primary election, the Surulere lawmaker said he remains loyal to the APC and committed to serving the people of his constituency.
The development has since sparked reactions online, with many Nigerians debating the future of Desmond Elliot’s political career after the surprising defeat.
