Trump Slams Anthropic CEO Over AI Slowdown Call, Claims “Sick Conspiracy”

Trump Slams Anthropic CEO Over AI Slowdown Call, Claims “Sick Conspiracy”

President Donald Trump has strongly rejected calls to slow the development of artificial intelligence, directing sharp criticism at Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei.

In a Truth Social post, Trump described concerns about rapid AI progress and data centers as part of “a SICK conspiracy” that he said only benefits China. He argued that the only control or “guardrails” AI requires is “a STRONG AND SMART (High IQ!) PRESIDENT,” claiming the United States already has that leadership.

Trump also accused Amodei of now acting like a “perfect little angel” after previously being among those the administration had reined in, and stressed that existing criminal and regulatory powers are already sufficient.

The comments follow Amodei’s recent public call for AI companies to deliberately pace the advancement of their most capable models. Amodei argued this would give researchers and governments more time to address serious risks while still allowing meaningful progress. Elon Musk and OpenAI CEO Sam Altman both expressed agreement with the need for greater caution, with Musk stating Amodei was “right.”

The statements contributed to declines in tech stocks across Asia, Europe, and the United States as investors reacted to the prospect of slower AI development. Critics of a slowdown, including the president, have warned that any deliberate pause by American companies could allow China to close the gap in the global AI race.
