Australia Cuts Ties With Iran After Shocking Attacks on Jewish Institutions

In a stunning move that has sent shockwaves across the globe, Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese announced Tuesday that his government is severing all diplomatic ties with Iran after intelligence confirmed Tehran orchestrated two arson attacks on Jewish institutions in Australia last year.

“These were extraordinary and dangerous acts of aggression orchestrated by a foreign nation on Australian soil,” Albanese declared at a tense press conference, flanked by top intelligence and security officials.

The attacks targeted Lewis’ Continental Kitchen in Sydney in October and the Adass synagogue in Melbourne two months later. While no lives were lost, Albanese stressed that such actions represented a direct assault on Australia’s sovereignty and the safety of its Jewish community.

Mike Burgess, the nation’s intelligence chief, revealed that an extensive months-long investigation uncovered direct ties between the incidents and Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC)which Australia will now officially designate as a terrorist organization.

The decision to expel all Iranian diplomats marks one of the harshest foreign policy responses by Canberra in decades, signaling a new era of zero tolerance for state-backed violence. Foreign Minister Penny Wong echoed Albanese’s stance, saying Australia “will not be intimidated or tolerate aggression from abroad.”

The fallout could reshape Australia’s role on the world stage, aligning it closer with the U.S. and Europe, both of which have long accused Tehran of exporting terrorism.

For Australia’s Jewish community, the move comes as both a relief and a stark reminder of the rising dangers of antisemitism worldwide.

“This is about more than politics,” Albanese said firmly. “It’s about defending our people, our values, and our democracy.”
