Convicted terrorist Kabiru Umar, popularly known as Kabiru Sokoto, has approached the Court of Appeal in Abuja to challenge his 2013 conviction and life sentence over terrorism-related offences.
According to fresh court documents, Umar is asking the appellate court to allow him file an appeal out of time, claiming delays were caused by years of incarceration, transfers between prisons and the deaths of two lawyers handling his case.
Kabiru Sokoto was convicted in 2013 over terrorism-related offences linked to the 2011 Madalla church bombing that killed dozens during Christmas celebrations.
However, his lawyers now argue that he was not convicted for masterminding the bombing itself, but for allegedly withholding information related to the attack.
The legal team also claimed the trial court relied on the wrong law during his conviction and questioned the validity of his confessional statement.
He is now asking the Court of Appeal to overturn the judgment and acquit him.
