The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has asked Nigerians demanding an investigation into the N135.6m cash donation made by the senator representing Borno Central Senatorial District, Kaka Lawan, to All Progressives Congress officials in the state as Sallah gift, to submit a formal petition to the agency.
The anti-graft agency said it would only act based on facts and official complaints, not social media outrage or speculation.
EFCC spokesperson, Dele Oyewale, stated this while reacting to public criticism that followed the senator’s distribution of cash to APC executives across his constituency ahead of the Eid-el-Kabir celebration.
“Anybody who feels that he has contravened the law or is suspected to have contravened the law should write a petition to the EFCC and the commission will look into it,” Oyewale said.
“It is not enough to be making commentaries on social media. The EFCC works with facts and not speculations,” he added.
The controversy began after an aide to the senator, Usman Alkali, announced in a Facebook post that Senator Kaka Shehu Lawan distributed N135,650,000 to APC executives in Borno Central as Sallah packages.
According to the aide, the donation was made to support party officials during the Eid-el-Kabir celebration and to appreciate them for their commitment to the party.
“This is the third time the senator has given such a donation since becoming a member of the National Assembly,” Alkali reportedly stated.
The development sparked reactions online, with several Nigerians calling on the EFCC to investigate the source and legality of the funds, while others defended the senator’s action as political empowerment and festive support.
