Delta Police Arrest Man for Allegedly Buying Beretta Pistol via Snapchat for ₦450,000

Delta Police Arrest Man for Allegedly Buying Beretta Pistol via Snapchat for ₦450,000

The Delta State Police Command has arrested a suspect over the alleged illegal possession of a firearm reportedly purchased through social media.

According to the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Bright Edafe, the suspect identified as Igbunu Evans was arrested after allegedly acquiring a Beretta pistol via Snapchat.

How the Suspect Allegedly Got the Gun

Police say the suspect purchased the firearm from an online vendor on Snapchat and had it delivered to him for about ₦450,000.

The weapon was later recovered from him during arrest. Authorities described it as a Beretta pistol with magazine and two 9mm ammunition, noting that such firearms are strictly reserved for authorised security agencies.

Suspect’s Confession

During interrogation, the suspect reportedly admitted to purchasing the weapon, claiming it was for “self-protection” against unknown gunmen and kidnappers.

He also confessed to being involved in internet fraud for about three to four years.

Police Reaction

Reacting to the development, SP Bright Edafe warned against the rising trend of illegal arms acquisition, linking it to broader criminal activities.

He explained that crimes such as internet fraud, cultism, drug abuse, and illegal weapon possession are often interconnected.

According to him, “one crime often leads to another,” stressing the dangers of such behavior in society.

He further emphasized that possession of such firearms is illegal, adding that Beretta pistols are restricted weapons meant only for government security agencies.

Next Steps

The suspect is currently in police custody and is expected to be charged to court.

Conclusion

The case highlights growing concerns over the misuse of social media platforms in facilitating illegal activities, including arms trafficking, and the need for stricter monitoring of online spaces.
