A river in Alaska has surged to unprecedented levels after a powerful glacial outburst, sending torrents of water downstream and flooding surrounding areas. Officials say the sudden release of water was triggered when a glacier’s ice dam burst a rare but dangerous event that can unleash massive flooding in minutes.
Residents along the riverbanks reported hearing a deep rumble before water levels began to rise rapidly, forcing some to evacuate. Roads were closed, and emergency crews worked through the night to monitor the situation and warn nearby communities of the potential for further flooding.
Scientists say melting glaciers accelerated by rising global temperatures are making such events more frequent and more extreme. “This is not just a local story. It’s part of a bigger pattern of climate-related changes happening across the Arctic,” one climate researcher warned.
