Kamala Harris Holds Commanding Double-Digit Lead in California Governor Race Poll

If Vice President Kamala Harris decides to run for governor of California, she might not even need to introduce herself.

A new poll out of California has sent shockwaves through the political scene, showing Harris with a double-digit lead over every other declared or potential candidate in the race to replace Governor Gavin Newsom in 2026.

According to the UC Irvine poll, Harris dominates with 24% support in a hypothetical multi-candidate field while her closest competitors, including names like Rep. Katie Porter, Attorney General Rob Bonta, and former Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, all trail far behind in the single digits.

The poll also found that Harris holds strong appeal across racial, age, and regional lines, and is by far the most recognizable name in the mix. With nearly universal name recognition and years of experience on the national stage, Harris is clearly the heavyweight in the ring without even officially entering the race.

While Harris has not confirmed whether she’ll run, insiders say she is seriously considering it and may announce a decision by late summer. Some political observers believe the race is effectively frozen until she makes her move.

If she enters, the path to the governor’s office could be hers to lose.
