He Was Released After 38 Years in Prison Then ICE Came for Him

Just weeks after being released from prison for a wrongful conviction, 64-year-old Luis Ramirez was detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), triggering outrage from immigrant rights groups and legal activists.

Ramirez was exonerated in April after DNA evidence cleared him of a 1986 murder charge. But because he is not a U.S. citizen, ICE took him into custody upon his release, citing a prior immigration order from the 1990s.

“This is cruel beyond belief,” said his attorney, Mia Chen. “He was robbed of his life by the justice system, and now they want to deport him?”

ICE officials confirmed Ramirez is being held at a federal detention center in Indiana. Legal advocates have filed an emergency motion to stop deportation proceedings.

Ramirez’s case has reignited debate over the treatment of exonerated non-citizens.
