He Escaped War in Sudan — Only to Be Shot by Police in Georgia

Omar Dawoud fled war-torn Sudan in 2020, seeking peace and freedom in the U.S. He found neither.

Last week, he was shot three times by police in Marietta, Georgia, after allegedly “acting suspiciously” outside a gas station even though he was unarmed and had committed no crime.

Witnesses say Dawoud had called for help after losing his phone and was disoriented due to language barriers. His family says he was having a panic attack.

Now in critical condition, Dawoud’s case has sparked outrage among immigrant rights groups who say this is just one more example of systemic over-policing of refugees and people of color.

“Omar survived a war zone,” his brother said. “But not American fear.”
