The UN’s largest-ever ocean summit has kicked off in Nice, France, as over 4,000 delegates, scientists, and activists gather to confront the marine biodiversity crisis.
The top agenda item: a proposal for a $100 billion global ocean fund to support coral reef protection, combat plastic pollution, and preserve fish stocks.
UN Secretary-General António Guterres called the ocean crisis “a ticking time bomb,” warning that without urgent action, parts of the sea may become “biologically dead zones” by 2040.
The conference also hopes to ratify the long-awaited High Seas Biodiversity Treaty, a landmark deal to govern oceans beyond national borders.
