Trump’s Mega Bill Squeaks Through Senate But GOP Divisions Steal the Spotlight

Trump’s Mega Bill Squeaks Through Senate But GOP Divisions Steal the Spotlight

President Donald Trump’s sweeping economic bill dubbed the “Mega Bill” narrowly advanced in the U.S. Senate on Saturday, despite surprising defections from within his own party.

The legislation, which promises massive tax cuts, expanded border security funding, and sweeping changes to federal spending, cleared a key hurdle with just enough votes to move forward. But what’s grabbing headlines isn’t just the bill itself it’s the cracks within the GOP that were on full display.

At least five Republican senators broke ranks, voting against the measure and signaling deep unease with the bill’s cost, policy direction, or the political gamble it represents ahead of the 2024 election.

“This isn’t conservatism. It’s chaos dressed as reform,” one Republican senator, speaking anonymously, told reporters after the vote.

Despite the resistance, Trump allies are calling the bill a “win for the American people,” arguing it’s a long-overdue move to “undo Biden-era damage” and reignite economic growth. The former president, who is leading the GOP primary race, is said to be closely watching how this bill plays out as a test of party loyalty and legislative muscle.

Democrats, for their part, remain firmly opposed warning that the plan would explode the deficit while favoring the wealthy and stripping social programs.

With more debate still ahead, one thing is clear: Trump’s influence is alive in the Senate, but his grip isn’t what it used to be.

This narrow vote has set the stage for a fiery showdown in Congress and possibly, the campaign trail.
