A well-known restaurant in Sydney, Zafferano Trattoria Mediterranea, has shut down as its owners say Australia’s economy is falling apart and small businesses can no longer survive.
Chef Simone Crivello and his partner Isobel Galloway opened the Italian restaurant in March 2021 on South Dowling Street in Paddington. It used to be full every night, with regular bookings and a busy, lively atmosphere. But now, they say, the tables are often empty.
“Our restaurant was once full, bookings every night, laughter echoing through the walls, and food made with soul,” said Galloway. “Now we’re lucky if a few tables fill.”
Galloway says high rent, rising food prices, and fewer customers are pushing small restaurants out of business. She believes the country is already in a recession, even if the government doesn’t admit it.
“It’s not just us, it’s all around. Small businesses are dying in silence while rent climbs, costs soar, and politicians pretend everything is fine,” she said.
The restaurant’s closure is part of a growing trend across Australia, where many small businesses are struggling to stay open due to economic pressure and a drop in spending.
