Idaho Wildfire Turns Deadly as Gunman Opens Fire on Firefighters, Killing Two

A chaotic and heartbreaking scene unfolded Sunday afternoon in northern Idaho, where a wildfire emergency turned into a deadly shooting as firefighters were ambushed while trying to contain the blaze.

According to Kootenai County Sheriff Robert Norris, at least two people have been killed after an unidentified suspect opened fire on first responders battling the wildfire near the mountainous region. Speaking at a tense press conference, Sheriff Norris confirmed that first responders were “actively taking sniper fire as we speak.”

“This is not just a wildfire scene anymore this is an active shooter situation,” he said. “We still have civilians coming down from that mountain. Some may be trapped. Some may be in shock. This is a very, very fresh and dangerous moment.”

The sheriff did not confirm whether the suspect was targeting firefighters specifically or if the gunman’s motive is known, but said law enforcement is “prepared to neutralize this suspect as quickly as possible.”

Emergency crews are working under extreme pressure to battle both the flames and the gunfire, while trying to safely evacuate remaining civilians in the area. Air support and SWAT units have reportedly been deployed.

The shooting has shocked residents and firefighters alike. “We go up there to save lives, not lose our own,” one firefighter told local media, visibly shaken.

Officials are urging the public to avoid the area entirely as the situation remains active and volatile.
