Canada Cancels Digital Tax After Trump Pressure Big Tech Wins, Again

It took one call from Trump and Canada blinked. Just hours before its 3% digital services tax was to take effect, Canada abruptly scrapped the plan, stunning lawmakers and lobbyists alike. The tax was aimed at U.S. tech giants like Amazon, Google, and Meta, but it also threatened to unravel delicate U.S.-Canada trade talks.

According to insiders, President Trump personally phoned Canadian Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland over the weekend, calling the policy foolish and anti-American. Within 48 hours, the tax was gone.

Supporters of the tax say it would’ve ensured tech giants pay their fair share. Critics say the reversal shows just how much power Silicon Valley and Washington still hold over global policy.

Meanwhile, Canadian officials insist the tax might still return in a revised form but not before trade deals are signed.
