Heavy rainfall and flash floods have devastated parts of New South Wales, Australia, causing at least five confirmed deaths and leaving one person missing. Officials are calling it a “1-in-500-year” weather event as entire towns remain underwater.
The state and federal governments have declared a natural disaster zone, with emergency services conducting rescues in over a dozen towns. Meteorologists say a rare slow-moving low-pressure system is to blame, and more rain is expected in coming days.
Climate experts point to global warming and shifting jet streams as contributors to the growing frequency of these disasters.
