Authorities in Mississippi say they believe 29-year-old Tasia Fortune was already dead before her body was placed in a tree behind an abandoned home in Jackson, in what investigators have described as a staged hanging.
The revelation came during a court hearing on Friday, September 25, when Jackson Police Department Detective Samuel Dukes testified that investigators believe Fortune was killed during a dispute involving drugs and that her body was subsequently taken to the location where it was found.
Fortune, a Black mother of four, was found hanging from a tree on August 3. The disturbing discovery attracted widespread attention because the circumstances recalled Mississippi’s long history of racial violence and lynchings.
According to the detective, the medical examiner determined that Fortune’s death was a homicide and that the hanging had been staged. Authorities, however, have not publicly disclosed the precise cause of death or explained why investigators believe her body was hung after she had already died.

Mother Seeks Justice for Her Daughter
Fortune’s mother, Christy Spivey, has continued to seek answers about what happened to her daughter.
Speaking outside the Jackson Police Department on Friday, Spivey said she believes her daughter fought for her life before she was killed. Fortune left behind four children, ages 7, 5, 4 and 1, according to her mother.
Wearing a shirt reading “Justice for Tasia Fortune,” Spivey said she wants investigators to identify the people actually responsible for her daughter’s death.
“I just hope they have the right people,” she told reporters.
Two Arrested as Investigation Continues
Police have arrested two men in connection with Fortune’s death.
Jarques Ratliff, 51, was arrested earlier this month and charged with murder. He has pleaded not guilty and remains in custody without bond. During Friday’s hearing, Ratliff said that he and Fortune had been friends.
A second man, 25-year-old Earnest Lloyd Jr., was arrested this week and also faces a murder charge.
Police have also issued an arrest warrant for a third person, although authorities have not publicly identified that individual. The investigation remains ongoing.
The preliminary hearing involving Ratliff is scheduled to resume on September 30. The proceeding is intended to determine whether there is sufficient evidence for the case to proceed to a grand jury.
Why the Case Drew National Attention
The circumstances surrounding Fortune’s death generated fear and concern in Jackson because of the historical significance of lynchings in Mississippi and throughout the American South.
However, authorities have not said that race was a factor in Fortune’s killing. Investigators have instead testified that the apparent motive was a dispute involving drugs. The fact that her body was found hanging was what initially raised concerns and prompted widespread public attention.
As the investigation continues, authorities are expected to provide more information about how Fortune died, who was responsible and why her body was placed in the tree.
For Fortune’s family, the immediate priority remains obtaining answers and justice for a mother who left behind four young children.
