The Nigeria Police Force has confirmed the death of 17 police officers following a terrorist attack on the Nigerian Army Special Forces School in Buni Yadi, Gujba Local Government Area of Yobe State.
According to reports, the officers were undergoing special operational training when terrorists launched a coordinated assault on the facility in the early hours of May 8, 2026.
Force Public Relations Officer, Anthony Placid, disclosed in a statement that the attackers stormed the training institution from multiple directions around 1:15am, leading to heavy casualties during the attack.
“The officers, who were undergoing specialized operational training at the institution, lost their lives when terrorists launched a coordinated attack on the facility from multiple directions at about 0115hrs,” the statement said.
The police also confirmed that some Nigerian Army personnel were killed while trying to repel the attackers during the gun battle.
Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, described the slain officers as brave personnel who sacrificed their lives in service to the country.
According to the statement, the IGP said the officers displayed courage and commitment to national security while participating in advanced counter-terrorism and tactical training.
He extended condolences to the families of the deceased and assured them that the sacrifice of the fallen officers would never be forgotten.
The Commissioner of Police in Yobe State, Usman Kanfani Jibrin, also visited the training facility on behalf of the IGP to sympathise with military authorities and surviving trainees.
The police further assured Nigerians that security agencies were working together to track down those responsible for the deadly attack.
