Nigeria’s Chief of Defence Staff, Christopher Gwabin Musa, has issued a strong warning to individuals aiding criminal groups across the country.
Speaking during a recent engagement in Kaduna, the defence chief stated that anyone providing support to bandits or terrorists would be treated as part of the criminal network.
A Tough New Message
According to him:
“A friend of a thief is a thief. Anybody who is doing any trading or providing any support to them, we will find you… and we will deal with you like bandits, like terrorists.”

The statement signals a tougher approach by the military towards not only perpetrators of violence but also those enabling their activities.
Focus on Support Networks
Security experts have long pointed out that criminal groups rely heavily on local support systems, including:
• Informants
• Suppliers
• Financial backers
By targeting these networks, authorities aim to weaken the operational strength of bandits and terrorist groups.
Context: Rising Security Concerns
The warning comes amid ongoing security challenges in parts of Nigeria, particularly in the North, where banditry and insurgency have continued to affect communities.
Recent developments have increased pressure on security agencies to adopt more decisive strategies.
Public Reaction and Concerns
While some Nigerians support tougher measures, others believe such statements must be backed by:
• Proper intelligence
• Due process
• Protection of innocent civilians
Final Thoughts
The message from the defence chief is clear the fight against insecurity is expanding beyond the battlefield to include anyone linked to criminal operations.
The key question now is how this strategy will be implemented in practice.
