Trump Defends 600,000 Chinese Students in America: “Without Them, Our Colleges Would Go to Hell”

President Donald Trump stunned both supporters and critics by defending the presence of over 600,000 Chinese students studying in the United States.

Calling it “insulting” to suggest they should be kicked out, Trump argued that America’s university system depends on them for survival.

“We’re getting along very well with China… it’s very insulting to say ‘students can’t come here.’ They’ll go out and build schools, they’ll be able to survive it. I like that their students come here,” Trump said.

He went further, warning that if Chinese students stopped coming to the U.S., America’s higher education system would collapse:

“You know what would happen if they didn’t? Our college system would go to hell, very quickly.”

While Trump insisted that students are carefully checked and monitored, he framed their presence as essential, calling America’s higher education “a tremendous system” that China itself respects and seeks out.

This latest statement is sparking fierce debate online. Supporters say it shows Trump’s commitment to education and his pragmatism about U.S.–China relations. Critics, however, accuse him of ignoring security risks and underestimating the influence of foreign students on American campuses.

Either way, one thing is clear: Trump’s comments have put the spotlight back on the massive role international students play in U.S. universities and whether America is truly prepared to live without them.
