Vietnam Cracks Down on Online Critics Ahead of Party Congress

Vietnam Cracks Down on Online Critics Ahead of Party Congress

Vietnam’s government is intensifying its crackdown on digital dissent as the Communist Party prepares for its next national congress. Over the past two months, more than a dozen bloggers, activists, and ordinary citizens have been arrested under Article 331 an increasingly controversial law targeting “abuse of democratic freedoms.”

Rights groups warn that the latest wave of repression represents a broader effort to control public discourse and silence criticism of party leadership.

“These arrests aren’t about national security they’re about silencing the truth,” said John Sifton of Human Rights Watch.

The developments highlight Vietnam’s deepening authoritarian turn, even as it seeks closer ties with Western economies.
