Global Coral Bleaching Reaches Catastrophic Levels

Global Coral Bleaching Reaches Catastrophic Levels

The world’s coral reefs are facing their worst bleaching crisis in recorded history, with more than 84% of reef systems impacted since early 2023. Scientists blame rising sea temperatures and climate change for triggering the fourth global coral bleaching event one that has now eclipsed all previous events in severity and scale.

From Australia’s Great Barrier Reef to the coast of Florida, iconic marine ecosystems are rapidly dying. “This is not just an environmental issue it’s an economic and food security issue for millions,” said Dr. Ana Molina of the Oceanic Research Institute.

Experts warn that without immediate, large-scale emissions reductions, coral systems could be functionally extinct within decades.

The crisis has sparked renewed calls for climate action, but many fear it may already be too late to reverse the damage.
